The Longfin Inshore Squid (Doryteuthis pealeii) is the iconic Rhode Island calamari: small, sweet, and delicate, it has been a chef and foodie favorite for decades. When we began harvesting and packing it for foodservice professionals, there was no better name than to honor its heritage - so we called it Rhode Island Calamari®.

Foodservice distributors and restaurants who insist on quality choose our Longfin squid time after time. Seafood buyers looking for product of the USA seafood also choose our Rhode Island Calamari®. Professional chefs who insist on certified sustainable seafood also pick The Town Dock's Longfin squid: it was the first-ever Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified sustainable squid species.

When the State of Rhode Island voted on the official state appetizer, the winner was Rhode Island Style Calamari, traditionally made with the local Longfin squid. It won in part because it is unbelievably delicious, and in part because the squid fishery has brought and kept jobs and opportunities to the historic Port of Galilee, on Point Judith, in Narragansett, Rhode Island. We would know - we're one of the largest employers in the Port.

Because of the popularity of the squid from Rhode Island long before it was reclassified, you often still hear this squid species referred to as Loligo, Boston Loligo, or Boston Squid. Since the FDA no longer lists "loligo" as an acceptable market name for this species, we (as always) honor the regulations - but if you ask us for our Rhode Island loligo, we'll know what you mean! 

Don't need it frozen? Rhode Island Calamari® is an option in our Chef Ready Calamari program when inventory allows (remember, this is a wild-caught species!). This is a ready-to-cook product with small minimums and a quick order cycle.
